Description

This Full Circle Compass shown above can also be referred to as a 'Stock Compass' since it is basically a magnetic compass equipped with a sighting device which can be used in the surveying field. It is manufactured as a self contained instrument allowing magnetic bearings to be measured and transferred to the terrain. The compass can be fastened to a rod or a simple light tripod and levelled with the circular bubble. The compass is placed under the horizontal circle which is graduated to 360 degrees. The sighting devices situated on the compass are also graduated to allow tilt determinations in the vertical axis.

History & comments

First instruments are dated 1030-1093 ( Encyclopaedia of Shon-Kua China ). The Compass was introduced to Europe by Marco Polo in 1260.
