Description

Compact Abney level with square gunsight ('telescope'). The tubular level is observed through the 'telescope' with a pin hole and a horizontal wire in square tube.

Convenient fine and coarse motion screws to adjust the bubble to the line of sight.

The circle is graduated from -90° to + 90° in 1° steps (vernier scale graduated in 10' intervals). Other graduations: ELEVn from 1-1 to 10 and DEPn from 10 to 1-1.

A small magnifying glass is attached for the reading of the vernier scale.

The 'telescope' and the bubble carrier are painted black. The circle is in brass and (white) metal.

History & comments

The instrument carries the 'broad arrow' (next to 'MK.5' in photo), indicating British military issue.

Conservation

in leather pouch (125 x 56 x 70 mm).

Condition

some paint damage.

Remarks

leather case marked 'No. 19' with DYMO tape and '598' in permanent marker pen.
