Service Compass

Description

This Service Compass is a small pocket instrument typically used in the Army, and is a close relation to the Prismatic compass. It is also sometimes referred to as a Universal Pocket Transit (Brunton type). The front vane however, is replaced by a folding lid containing a mirrored disc, and a vertical line is etched on the mirror replacing the vertical wire in the ordinary vane. This mirror is also used to read the compass needle. There is a circular bubble fitted inside the compass. The compass features three graduations, a full 360 degree circle graduation, a 180 degree half-circle graduation for alignment and a smaller graduation used for slope angle measurement. It also features a handle that enables the tubular bubble inside the box to be centred (and the slope angle read).
