Description

The brass instrument resembles a quadrant but covers only a sector of 60° and lacks pointing aids. The instrument is graduated in 1° intervals from 0° (near thr arm that carries the handle) to 60°. Interpolation to 0.1° (6') is possible.

The moving arm has a weight (near the locking screw) and acts like a plumbob if the handle points to within 60° of the zenith. Two mushroom shaped screws are located at the ends (and behind) the bar that carries the handle and could be used to align the zero of the angular scale with a string line or an edge.

It is likely that the device was used to measure the zenith angles of edges or string lines.

There are four small screw holes at the scale end of the arm opposite the arm with the handle. Is is therefore possible that the instrument shown in the figure is incomplete or had a custom made attachment removed.
