Description |
Black plane table alidade with parallel ruler. The alidade features levelling screws, a vertical circle (with vernier readout and vertical circle bubble) and a sun shade for the objective lens. The instrument is marked with the 'broad arrow', indicating British military issue. The parallel ruler is marked 'UNSW L044'. There is no length scale marked on the parallel ruler. The locking key for the box is present. The box is marked JCB 4607A on the inside. |
History & comments |
According to information received from the Science Museum in London, W. F. Stanley & Co Ltd was founded in 1958, producing wooden drawing instruments. Surveying instruments were manufactured since 1866 in London and South Norwood. The company became a limited company in 1900. George Heath and Co was acquired in 1926 and became the Stanley Scientific Instrument Works. Stanley's and Heath & Co were going well in the 1950s and 1960s. The business went into liquidation in 1999. |
